Dresden

So the great thing about having no plans is that we can make them up as we go along!  We had planned on going from Berlin to Prague, but we decided to make a pit stop in Dresden and stay for the night.  But first… we’ve officially moved on from living out of these:

Yay car!  I’m incredibly happy for my feet’s sake (Dad, I am forever in debt to you for convincing us to get the wheely bags), and Matt is like a little kid playing a video game driving:

We found an adorable little hotel in Dresden, super nice staff and the best room we’ve stayed in so far. After the hubub of Frankfurt and Berlin, it was nice to stay in a smaller/safer/cleaner town for a night.

When we got to Dresden we walked around town for a bit (since we were slacking on our daily quota) and had dinner.

The next day we headed to the Military Museum in Dresden, which was great.  The building is a meeting of old and new with a modern wing on one side that has an observation point as part of a memorial to the bombing of Dresden.

Of course my favorite part of the museum was a section about animals used in war.  It quickly became my least favorite part; the dog below is an example of tank dogs, which I will have nightmares about forever.  Dog lovers, look away-  in WWII they would train dogs to look for their food under tanks, they knew they would be rewarded with food if they climbed under them.  Then, in battle, they would strap these bombs to them that would go off when they crawled under enemy tanks.  I hate people.

Matt was in love with all the “cool war stuff” ie. lots of weapons and “micro machines”.  Oh boys…

Our last stop before we left was a grocery store to stock up on some basics (ie. beer, wine, avacoadoes).  We were terrified to check out as we discovered the language barrier was much greater in Dresden, but it all went pretty smoothly.

Looking back, that was nothing to the ordeal of filling the gas tank in a random Czech gas station…. more to come on that.  More on Prague tomorrow!
